On the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Stanislao Cannizzaro (1826–2026), the University of Palermo will host the International Congress “Cannizzaro 2026” (Palermo, 14–17 April 2026). The event will celebrate Cannizzaro’s multifaceted role as a scientist, patriot, senator, university professor, and as a central figure in the cultural and scientific life of the nineteenth century.
The Congress aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for historians of science, chemists, scholars of political and social studies, and educators, in order to explore both Cannizzaro’s legacy and the broader context of his time, with special attention to the circulation of scientific and political ideas in nineteenth-century Europe.
We welcome contributions addressing (but not limited to) the following topics:
- Life and works of Stanislao Cannizzaro
- Scientific contributions and their impact on chemistry and the natural sciences
- Political, patriotic, and teaching activity
- The nineteenth-century scientific context, in Italy and abroad, with special reference to chemistry
- The European socio-political context in the mid-nineteenth century, including the Italian Risorgimento and the European revolutions
- Educational and didactic perspectives related to the above themes, at both school and university level
